We love our volunteers! We are an organization that is 100% volunteer-run, so, literally, without our volunteers we would be nothing. We depend on their support for everything we do from housing renovations to the Little Free Libraries.
To match this with our non-profit's belief in relationship building within the neighborhood of Highland Park means a different take on volunteering. Relationships cannot be built in a day. For that reason, we look for commitment in our volunteers and look for them to return to continue to cultivate relationships that have started. This might mean pledging to participate in at least 4 monthly Work Days a year. Or, it might mean devoting yourself to be a Homework Helper on a regular basis. We are not a "one and done" organization.
Preparing for volunteers takes a lot of resources in both time and money. This is time and money taken away from the people our purpose is to serve. The end goal must always be the relationships we are building with the community as we strive to make lasting change and provide affordable housing to all. For this reason, we limit "short term" mission trips. We look for longer term partnerships like the ones we have with VCU's ASPiRE program, Second Presbyterian Church, and New Hanover Presbyterian Church. These groups assist HUM on a regular basis and have formed bonds in the community as a result. This is what we strive for as we want people to know that ALL are worthy.
If you or your organization is looking for commitment, we'd love to work with you! Contact us so we can introduce you to the Highland Park community we love!
